After failing to secure an outright majority in last week's presidential election in Liberia, 51-year-old former World Footballer of the Year, George Weah, will slog it out with 73-year-old Vice President Joe Boakai in a face-off that promises to be intriguing. The political horse-trading has already begun ahead of 7 November run-off, with both candidates trying to win over the 18 others they defeated. It is not clear immediately which way the alliances will go to produce the country¹s first democratic transfer of power in several generations.
In what seems to be a fight between young and older voters, Mr Boakai, the ruling party candidate, hopes to score a hat-trick against a football legend who hopes to be third time lucky. Mr Weah obtained 39% and Mr Boakai 29% of votes cast in Tuesday after nearly all polling stations were counted. "Justin has been seeing Paola but is not exclusively dating her," from a source. German-born Nigeria international defender Leon Balogun has once again voiced out his joy over his choice of representing Nigeria ahead of Germany. Known for his hard stance and no nonsense approach when it comes to defending, the 29 year old was in tears at the final whistle of the game and had to be consoled by his teammates. Speaking after the game, Balogun who was eligible to play for Germany as well before deciding on the Super Eagles said he never thought of playing for Germany, even though he was born there. “ I have never played for Germany since I started playing football. He listens and works hard and with time I believe he will become a top top player. “What he needs is to learn to score more goals and contribute more to the defensive side of the game. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will deliver the keynote address at this year’s Africa Summit, with the theme “What Makes Africa Work, ” taking place in London, from Oct. 8, to Oct. 9. The Vice Presidential Spokesman, Mr Laolu Akande, in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, said the vice president leaves for London on Saturday, and is expected back on Monday.
Akande stated that the Africa Summit hosted by the Financial Times (FT) of London is a global forum, reputed as one of the leading conferences in the world on African business and economic matters. He noted that the FT itself has had a relationship with the African continent that stretched back to its opening issue more than 125 years ago. “Osinbajo will discuss the increasing economic prospects in Africa and detail the progress of the Buhari administration, especially through the Federal Government’s medium-term Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), to the global audience" said Akande. Often in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by acres of land, South Africa's airport environs are solar farms waiting to happen.
With over 2,500 hours of sunshine per year in South Africa, it makes perfect sense for the country's airports to tap into this local resource. In the last year Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has unveiled three solar-powered airports across the country, the first on the African continent to harness solar power. By the end of this year three more regional airports will join the green initiative by launching solar power plants. The state-owned ACSA said that it is committed to reducing the pressure on South Africa's constrained power grid by around 50%. This is because the solar farms currently supply approximately 45% of the airport's power requirement. The remaining 55% is drawn from the national grid. "The long-term plan is to have the airports generate their own energy," says ACSA corporate affairs senior manager, Senzeni Ndebele. The company intends to "greenify" all its airports and achieve carbon neutrality by 2025, Ndebele explains. |
